Thanks to some excellent overall design it's pretty easy to see what's going on around you, and while it's unavoidably text-heavy, the UI is colourful, classy, and well-organised. It looks great on the Switch too, and this version stays largely true to the PC original. We tested on an iPhone 7s and this year's standard iPad, and while the load times (both in terms of booting up the game and then between turns) feel a little lengthier than they do on a capable gaming PC, you're not left waiting too long before you can return to your tinkering. We took a look at the iPad version after we were invited to look at the game on iPhone, but then we found out that the game was coming to Switch so we thought we'd kill three birds with one stone. Let's start chronologically and work our way through the timeline because the iOS versions are worth taking a look at too, even if the Switch release is the main reason we're here. We'll not delve into the nitty-gritty of Civ VI as we've already done that here, rather we'll focus on the functionality of Firaxis's game now that it has landed on these new platforms and can be played via both the touchscreen and, for the first time since Civilization Revolution hit last-gen consoles, on a traditional controller. Earlier this year it landed on iPad, this autumn it hit iPhone, and then this month we got another version of the game on Nintendo Switch. Firaxis has been beavering away at its flagship franchise non-stop, and so Aspyr Media has been handed the reins and tasked with bringing this epic strategy game to touchscreen devices. Civilization VI has been out on PC since 2016, and since then it has been updated with the Rise & Fall expansion - let's get it out of the way right now, for some reason this more recent content isn't included in the portable versions of the game - and there's an extremely interesting update on the horizon called Gathering Storm. Equipped with a deadly Predator Bow, there's no wrong way to save the world. Prophet must fight through seven distinct districts against human and alien forces, using the Nanosuit's superior technology to deploy brute force or opting for stealth to achieve his goals. New York City has been transformed into a sprawling urban rainforest sheltered by a giant nanodome. Equipped with the upgraded Nanosuit 2.0, customize your suit and weapons in real-time and unlock powerful abilities in the battle for humanity's survival. As the invaders lay waste to New York and begin an assault that threatens the total annihilation of humankind, only you have the technology to lead the fightback. Things to watch for are photos shot with a hi-speed "burst" shooting Mode where 3 or more photos are less than seconds apart. It would look like this in Lightroom's Library Module. Any photos with the same Capture time will be displayed side by side. Lightroom will display the photos sequentially, using the Camera's EXIF Data for "Time Captured" by Month, day, year and hours, minutes and seconds. Use the Library Filter for just Date, and turn off all the others (set to None) When isolated it appears as ﻩ and in the final/initial/medial position in a word it appears as ﻪ/ﻫ/ﻬ respectively. For instance the Arabic letter “heh” has four forms, depending on which sides are flanked by letters. The rules of some languages cause glyphs to change through contextual shaping. It’s not just fonts that cause graphemes to be rendered into varying glyphs. Inserting U+0061 into the asterisk position U+006f U+0302 (*) U+0323 changes the string “ộ” into “ôạ” rather than “ộa”. Programs must also be mindful of the combining characters, like diacritical marks, when inserting or deleting codepoints. Operations such as taking the length of an array of codepoints, or accessing arbitrary array positions are typically not useful for Unicode programs. This is called Normalization Form Canonical Composition (NFC).Ī core concept to remember is that, although codepoints are the building blocks of text, they don’t match up 1-1 with user-perceived characters (graphemes). Another choice is to do the opposite and use the fewest codepoints possible like example E. That is called Normalization Form Canonical Decomposition (NFD). One choice is to decompose a string into as many codepoints as possible like examples A and B (with a weighting factor of which combining marks should come first). A standardized choice of codepoint decomposition for graphemes is called a “normal form.” To meaningfully compare strings codepoint by codepoint for equality, both strings should both be represented in a consistent way. As illustrated above, multiple strings of codepoints may render into the same sequence of graphemes. The numbers (written U+xxxx) for each abstract character and each combining symbol are called “codepoints.” Every Unicode string is expressed as a list of codepoints. For instance ộ can be specified in five ways: Many graphemes can thus be created in more than one way. It assigns numbers to basic letters and combining marks, but also to some of their more common combinations. In reality Unicode takes both approaches. The graphemes can be built from letters and combining marks e.g. ậ = a + ◌̂ + ◌̣. Rather than assigning a distinct number to each, it’s more efficient to assign a number to o and a, and then to each of the combining marks. For instance (o, ô, ọ, ộ) and (a, â, ạ, ậ) follow a pattern. It would be wasteful because there is a combinatorial explosion between letters and diacritical marks. You might imagine that Unicode assigns each grapheme a unique number, but that is not true. They are rendered as “glyphs,” i.e. markings on paper or screen which vary by font, style, or position in a word. Pieces of a single grapheme always stay together in print breaking them apart is either nonsense or changes the meaning of the symbol. It’s the character as a user would understand it. A “grapheme” is a graphical unit that a reader recognizes as a single element of the writing system. Let’s start at the abstraction closest to the user: the grapheme cluster. The representation is further obscured by an additional encoding in memory, on disk, or during network transmission. What a native speaker of a language identifies as a letter or symbol is often stored as multiple values in the internal Unicode representation. Many languages have bindings to the library, so these concepts should be applicable to your language of choice.īefore getting into the example code, it’s important to learn the terminology. We’ll use the C API here for a better view into the internals. IBM (the maintainers of ICU) officially support a C, C++ and Java API. We’ll use the International Components for Unicode (ICU) library, which is mature, portable, and powers the international text processing behind many products and operating systems. This article illustrates text processing ideas with example programs. Realistically this means using a mature third-party library. Human languages are highly varied and internally inconsistent, and any application which treats strings as more than an opaque byte stream must embrace the complexity. The Unicode standard and specifications describe the proper way to divide words and break lines, sort text, format numbers, display text in different directions, split/combine/reorder vowels South Asian languages, and determine when characters may look visually confusable. Unicode also includes characters’ case, directionality, and alphabetic properties. Unicode is more than a numbering scheme for the characters of every language – although that in itself is a useful accomplishment. They contain internationalization features that often aren’t portable or don’t suffice. Most programming languages evolved awkwardly during the transition from ASCII to 16-bit UCS-2 to full Unicode. Day trippers are advised to bring a packed lunch as there is nowhere to get food, other than one shop which closes on Sundays. Most places are closed outside the tourist season. The tourist infrastructure on Clare Island however, is very basic, with only a few bed and breakfasts, one hostel, and a bar in the Community Centre. The island’s current permanent population of 130 souls increases substantially during the summer tourist season. The island lies just four miles off Roonagh Point, and the ferry crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. As the largest of the Mayo islands, Clare Island has a delightfully varied terrain, with spectacular sea-cliffs, very large numbers of nesting sea birds, and a rich ‘inland’ topography of hills, bogs, and small pockets of woodland. The form factor is also somewhat more compact than a twist-on. Push-ins are easier and quicker to install and make a repeatably reliable and consistent connection. The tab holds the conductor firmly in contact with the bus, so it doesn’t pull out. Rather, the connection below where the conductor presses into a larger, flat bus bar is more important. However, it’s not the small area of contact between the conductor and the tab which matters. On the surface, the connection might not look very sound. The underside of the spring reveals where the bus bar is spot welded to it. These were originally developed to combat the problems caused by vibration and thermal cycling (repeated temperature changes) that can cause screw-based connections like twist-ons and screw terminal blocks to work loose over time. Since as early as the 1950’s, push-in connectors have been available as an alternative to twist-ons. They can also be unreliable or difficult for do-it-yourselfers. Why? Because while they’re often reliable, easy to use, and inexpensive, they also tend to be bulkier. Twist-on connectors are the “Good” option. May require cutting and re-stripping conductors when re-making or modifying connections.Easy to make-up a poor connection by accident.Conductor ends can become too marred or defaced to reconnect, requiring them to be trimmed back and re-stripped. However, the spring inside the connector can eventually stretch and wear out. A connection may be made-up and undone or reconfigured any number of times. Twist-on wire connectors are designed to be removable/replaceable. Though, some use ceramic in specialized connectors designed for high-temperature applications like ovens or furnaces.įailing to pre-twist stranded wire conductors can result in an extremely poor connection. Twist-on connectors typically consist of a sharp-edged, conical metal spring set into a molded cap of insulating material. However, they’re now widely distrusted in many places internationally, due to issues with early porcelain versions outside North America cracking and failing, resulting in short circuits and fires. They have become near ubiquitous, particularly in Canada and the United States. Twist-on connectors have a long history of use in North America and parts of Europe going back to their invention in the early 20th century. Marr, is widely used in Canada as a genericized trademark to refer to twist-on connectors from any manufacturer. Marrette, a brand of connector named for their inventor William P.
